The Smiths play in front of a largely indifferent looking crowd at Dingwalls, Camden, August 9, 1983.

Imagine being in this crowd, being so close to a soon-to-be legendary band, and not even being aware of it! It doesn't appear that the spell of The Smiths was firmly cast at this early stage of the game, as this fascinating early photo shows. Luckily for Morrissey, acclaim for The Smiths spread very rapidly and soon they were too popular to ever play tiny venues like Dingwalls again. As Morrissey said, when asked if he was surprised at The Smiths being voted the best new group in the 1984 NME readers poll, "Not really, it all seemed quite natural, I would really have been surprised if we were still playing in Dingwalls."

Set List:
You've Got Everything Now, What Difference Does It Make?, Handsome Devil, Wonderful Woman, Reel Around The Fountain, These Things Take Time, I Don't Owe You Anything, Hand In Glove, Mserable Lie, Accept Yourself, Hand In Glove, Handsome Devil.
